About the company
The client is a Dutch e-commerce company that sells a large variety of consumer electronics in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, both online and in their 15 physical stores. It also offers end-to-end solutions to customers through the delivery and installation of the purchased items.
The company currently offers a wide assortment of consumer electronics, but also it sells and installs solar panels and charging stations. The customer has its own distribution center of a size of more than 80,000 m2.
The Challenge
The client was looking for an integrated system to transport, sort, and store the returned goods to their warehouse in the Netherlands. The manual processes used at that moment were reaching their maximum daily capacity and the department was losing efficiency.
The client’s expectation were to get a solution for moving the items separately to the correct workstation, reducing the number of movements of the transport unit, and doubling the processed incoming items per day.
The Solution
The solution was elaborated together with our partner, Inther Group. It includes the integration of a conveyor system along with the AS/RS shuttle system. The solution was implemented in customer’s warehouse to ensure a temporary or long-term storage of products within the system, and to improve the efficiency of the picking and sorting processes. ISD provided mechanical & electrical engineering, software development, as well as PLC automation support.
Mechanical & Electrical Engineering was provided via team extension (team augmentation) by 2 mechanical and 1 electrical engineer. They have participated in the elaboration of the Engineering layout, Sensors & Actuators Layout, and in the Pneumatic Layout.
ISD has also assigned for the project a dedicated team of 4 Software Engineers, 1 QA Engineer, and 1 Software Project Manager. A tech stack of Java, Spring, Maven, Hibernate, Java Message Service, and Vue was used for the software development part.
For PLC automation ISD contributed with an extended team of 2 PLC Engineers, and 1 PLC Project Lead. The PLC components were created in TIA Portal V.16, updated later to TIA Portal V.17, together with Human Machine Interface (HMI).
“What I liked most about this project is the team that I worked on. I was able to witness their true dedication for this project, always striving for better results. Also, as a Software Project Manager, I think I improved my managing skills, I started to estimate efforts much better and closer to the actual results.”
