  How important is an internship for your future career? Should you take one before taking a real job? Read the article below and find out more details about our internship programs and the benefits you gain by following one!

  Remember all those job ads requesting experience from the candidates? Besides experience, the candidates are supposed to be young and freshly out of the university. Talk about paradoxes… How is supposed to be very young and very experienced?

  You need experience to get experience, whether it comes from internships, volunteer work, or actually working somewhere. This seems to be the biggest issue for young adults starting a career nowadays.

  A practical work background carries a major significance when attempting to enter the job market.

  If you’re looking to gain experience, working as an intern is certainly the wisest plan of action.

  That one internship you followed could make a difference between winning a job opportunity or losing it. An internship enables you to learn from first-hand exposure while working in the real world and it also allows you to harness the skill and theoretical knowledge you have learnd in university.

  That internship gives you a chance to explore what a career in your field would be like. Sometimes, reality does not meet expectations. Furthermore, being an intern gives you more opportunities to build connections with company professionals that will be very beneficial for your future career.

Take the ISD internship

  There are several strong reasons why ISD offers internship programs:

  1. To give you the possibility to be hired at ISD.
  2. To provide interns with an opportunity to become part of truly interesting projects, using a stack of popular and useful technologies, gather new knowledge and professional skills.
  3. To develop and improve our colleagues’ mentoring skills.

Who can become an intern?

  The candidates for ISD internships are usually students and/or university graduates with little or no work experience. Interested persons are expected to pass 4 tests that check basic Java knowledge, basic SQL knowledge, English language knowledge, and logic.

  In order to be invited to an interview, the candidate is asked to complete all of the tests and obtain satisfactory results.

The interview

  Interviews provide an opportunity for the candidate to get more information about ISD, find out the internship projects we offer, and answers to other questions the candidate may have.

  All candidates are provided with complete information on the internship process, thus they can decide if it suits them or not.

Coaching workflow

  All development process is based on Scrum methodology and a Kanban board. The coaches, our colleagues, and your mentors will describe in short the methodology and all other important details. Also, they will help and guide you with product testing, feedback and bug fixing.

Final presentation

  Every internship ends with a presentation of the project the interns have been working on. It is up to them to decide what they want to present and how it will look like.

Post-internship procedures

  In case you accomplish good results and prove to have a proactive attitude, the board will most probably invite you to become a part of ISD.

Colleagues and couches

  Our teammate, Alexandru Bezu, Java Software Developer, tells us about his first experience of this kind:

  “Being a mentor for an intern is a new experience for me. So far, it has been a wonderful test for both the interns and us, the mentors. The interns face new problems and technologies that they might’ve heard of or vaguely used. As mentors, we have to be ready to answer and assist them with advice on how to face these issues. That’s a good learning curve for both sides – interns gain experience and tips from developers working in the field; mentors have a better understanding of technologies whenever they talk, explain and help the interns.

  I would recommend an internship to anyone who wants to start their career in IT. That would surely show them where the gaps in their knowledge base are. Moreover, a completed internship would provide real-life experience of working with a team on a project. A perfect start for any newbie, isn’t it?

  A piece of good advice for interns would be for them to be proactive before, during and after the internship. Never lose the enthusiasm, even if something might sometimes go wrong, or if some other intern is better than you. Always keep in mind that you need to constantly learn. Learn from those who know more than you.”

  Stanislav Scerbatiuc, Java Software Developer, is more experienced in being a mentor. Let’s see what he has to say:

  “Being a mentor is a unique experience for me. Different than I could imagine in so many aspects. It teaches you to focus on others’ difficulties and give hints that would allow them to both learn and overcome their struggles. You don’t have to give direct answers since most of the time this does not help in the long term. You have to figure out several ways of solving the issue, then suggest how to make the first step. In fact, this can also lead to interesting methods and ideas along the way, giving the participant the feeling that he’s reached the solution by him/herself and you as a mentor gain the possibility to observe and discover even more options. It’s a win-win situation.

  Speaking about win-win: there are a lot of other things you can win by being a mentor:

  1. Learn what you already know. This may sound corny, but you really strengthen your knowledge by teaching others. You may or may not agree, but if there is something that I can mention from my experience is that the studies on this subject do not lie. I dare you to explain something you think you know very well to a friend or colleague who’s never heard about this matter. You’ll find out that there are a lot of things that do not make sense when spoken, even if they do make sense in your mind.
  2. Practice public speaking. You learn how to overcome panic attacks in case you have hard times speaking in front of people that you don’t know. It might be scary the first time, but it gets better in time. A lot better. In different areas of your life.
  3. Become more organized. You’re in charge of the interns and since you’re leading the flow, you become even more organized in your daily routine.
  4. Become more patient. Explaining multiple times the same subject with different examples and perspectives is challenging in most cases.

  An internship is a perfect opportunity to join an existing team but take things slower. Before committing to something, you have to clearly figure out why you want to do that and the internship can answer this question. Everything can be explored during an internship, starting from the fact that you like the office or not to the fact of meeting the potential team members and find out more about the company policies and practices. If everything suits you, then you can be sure you’re well prepared for this step. If not, you did not spend the time in vain and can use the knowledge as a step towards your next dream.

  Take it seriously and take small steps. Do not overthink things: “Will I be hired or not?”, “Am I doing good or not?”. Try to do the best you can do and be sure that good work pays off. Do not be afraid to ask for help or to speak about your victories. Good luck!”

  It is clear that having internship experience makes you stand out. Employers prefer to hire coachable candidates that can easily transition into the work process. Internships are the best way to show potential employers that you can function well in a work environment.

  By doing a great job during your internship, you create a great impression that can provide a reference letter at the least, and may even potentially lead to a great job offer.
